Still Lives
The artist created Anthropomorphic Expressionism as a means of embedding deeper meaning and context within an otherwise common scene. The goal being to have the viewer feel the moment hidden behind the symbolic representation. While “Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar,” other times a pear can be ever so much more. This series captures those silent interactions that color the exchanges between individuals. These paintings question the very nature of that timeless and universal imagery of the still life; rich with symbolism and tokens of position, classic depictions of riches and the bounty of the upper class. Do not be mistaken; these works are deceptive. Indeed they are a kind of unspoken voyeuristic interpretation from the viewer’s perspective, watching an exchange, seeing the fullness of the dialog that reaches far beyond words. Capturing the complex and expertly choreographed dance in which we all take part, depicting the complex interplay of the non-verbal, these works eclipse the metaphorical with the anthropomorphic. Themes of intimacy, surprise, pride, tenderness, compassion, and regret, are captured in these luscious transformations, conveying the full richness of the human experience within a pear.
